MPH student wins Junior Player of the Year

Kevin VandenBerg finished as the Syracuse District Golf Association points leader and earned his third career Player of the Year award at the association’s end-of-the-year banquet Sept. 29 at Lake Shore Yacht and County Club.

Based on point standings for finishes at local and state events this season, the 51-year-old VandenBerg easily outdistanced Brad Monroe to win player of the year honors. VandenBerg’s major wins this season were the Apogee Investment Management Men’s Championship and the Gerry Ashe Memorial. He missed out on winning the District’s Triple Crown when he finished second in the SDGA Championship behind Monroe.

Fourteen-year-old Johnny Gruninger received two awards, Junior Player of the Year and Boys Player of the Year. The Manlius Pebble Hill freshman qualified for the AIM Championship, won the SDGA Junior Classic Championship, qualified for SDGA Williamson Cup team and competed in the 2017 state high school championships.
