MPH, Grimes boys soccer tie, 2-2

When they met for the first of two regular-season encounters, the Bishop Grimes and Manlius-Pebble Hill boys soccer teams ended up in a 2-2 draw last Wednesday afternoon In DeWitt.

Sean Kilpatrick and Eisa Adam put in goals that gave the Cobras a 2-1 halftime lead. The Trojans rallied, though, tying it in the second half and holding on through 20 minutes of overtime that did not lead to a resolution.

Drew Giles and Adam Feiszli earned MPH’s goals, while Gerrit Church and Tim Glass picked up assists. Cal Dougherty made 10 saves, three more than Grimes counterpart Mike Bespiaty.

Further proof of MPH’s uneven play in the first half of the regular season could be found in last Monday night’s 2-0 defeat to Fabius-Pompey.

The Trojans took nearly twice as many shots as the Falcons, only to see F-P goalie Matt Perry make 11 saves. That effort got rewarded when, in the second half, Tristin Rapp scored a goal and assisted on Nick Randall’s tally to break a long deadlock.

Quickly, MPH turned it around Friday, beating Bishop Ludden 5-1 to complete a regular-season sweep of the Gaelic Knights, whom it knocked off Sept. 12 to get head coach Don Ridall his 500th career win.

Richie Medina returned to top form, burning Ludden for a three-goal hat trick, while Glass and Duncan Morrison earned the other goals. Jimmy Gavigan had two assists, with Wyatt Scott, Zaim Nizam and Albert Blanck also earning assists.

Grimes, also playing on Friday, beat Cato-Meridian by that same 5-1 margin. David Firenze had two goals and one assist, with Nai Mayen and Matt Hahn both getting one goal and one assist. Miles Woode earned the other goal.

Meanwhile, the Bishop Grimes girls soccer team continued to try and amass victories. In last Tuesday’s home game against LaFayette, the Cobras took care of the Lancers 5-1.

It proved nervous early, as Elisa Camilleri’s goal helped LaFayette earn a 1-1 first-half tie, but Grimes’ attack took over in the late stages with four unanswered goals.

Kennedy Yearby, who scored twice, and Toni Laneve, with three assists, led that push, while Ellen Callahan, Alex Guhin and Jordan Vaught managed one goal apiece.

The Cobras lost, though, to Fabius-Pompey 1-0 Thursday night. Morgan had a sensational outing, earning 16 saves, and kept everything out until Macey Morse scored in the second half to put the Falcons in front.

MPH’s girls used a big first half to sail past Faith Heritage 4-2. The Trojans were up 3-0 by halftime, so it was able to withstand the Saints’ late-game push.

Terry Netusil led the whole effort, scoring twice and assisting on the other two goals, by Katie Blandford and Alexa Martinez-Martineau. When Blanford was in the net, she combined with Sammy Appleby for 13 saves.

The Trojans made it back-to-back wins on Friday, shutting out LaFayette 3-0. All the goals came in the first half as Blanford, Martinez-Martineau and Vicki Gregory converted and Netusil finished with a pair of assists.
