Learning Support Services

At Manlius Pebble Hill, learning support resources are intentionally limited so that we can remain focused on a highly personalized, college-preparatory academic program. During the admissions process, our team works closely with families to discuss a student’s learning profile and help determine whether MPH is the right fit. These conversations are essential to ensuring that students can access the curriculum, be appropriately challenged, and thrive within our academic environment.

Within this model, we are able to provide a layered system of learning support designed to help students access coursework, strengthen core skills, and continue progressing with confidence. To better understand what this looks like in practice, we invite you to review our supports outlined below.

At MPH, some students may benefit from short-term, targeted support to strengthen specific skills in areas such as literacy, math, writing, or executive functioning. This support is typically provided on an as-needed basis and may include brief small-group instruction, limited one-to-one support, or targeted guidance around organization, study strategies, or time management. Interventions are informed by observation and assessment, with the goal of addressing a specific need and helping students quickly re-engage independently with the core classroom program rather than relying on ongoing services.

As a smaller school, MPH has a dedicated Academic Support Specialist who partners closely with classroom teachers and communicates with families when a specific student need is identified. This collaborative approach allows us to review student progress, support differentiated instruction, and coordinate appropriate strategies within the scope of our program.

When appropriate, accommodations and differentiated supports are provided to help students fully access the curriculum. These supports are closely aligned with the nature of the MPH academic program. Rather than relying heavily on pull-out instruction, most learning support occurs within the classroom through purposeful, differentiation. In coordination with our Academic Support Specialist, teachers may adjust instructional approaches, assignments, or assessments as needed while maintaining the rigor, pace, and expectations of our college-preparatory curriculum.

A common question we receive is whether students can follow an individualized or separate curriculum. At MPH, students are expected to engage with our core curriculum. While we provide reasonable accommodations, differentiation, and short-term targeted support when appropriate, we are not structured to deliver fully individualized or parallel curricula for students. Being clear about this helps ensure alignment between family expectations and what our program is designed to provide, so that each student enrolled is positioned to succeed within the MPH academic environment.

Executive functioning and study skills are incorporated across our curriculum as part of the MPH learning experience. While students benefit from guidance in organization, planning, note-taking, and test preparation, MPH is not structured to provide intensive coaching in these areas. Our students tend to be naturally motivated, organized, and engaged learners. Executive function skills are reinforced through classroom expectations and academic practices rather than formal, stand-alone coaching programs.

MPH has a counseling support team in place as part of our commitment to student well-being. While most students are not dependent on regular counseling services within the school day, our emotional support counselor plays an important role in ensuring that students’ mental health and overall well-being are supported at the highest level. This resource is available for individual or small-group support when needed and works in partnership with faculty and families to help students maintain balance, build resilience, and thrive both academically and personally.

We are proud to continuously provide enrichment and academic extension, driven by the strength of our teachers, the curiosity and motivation of our students, and a culture that values challenge. In classrooms every day, teachers naturally extend learning through advanced coursework, project-based experiences, and deeper exploration of ideas. This approach allows students who are ready for more challenge to pursue their interests, think critically, and deepen understanding within a supportive, intellectually engaging environment.

At MPH, collaboration with families is a core value and an essential part of supporting successful, confident, and happy learners. We maintain open and ongoing lines of communication through detailed report cards, regular progress updates, and frequent communication from classroom teachers. Families are encouraged to partner with us through conversations, meetings, and support offered both inside and outside the classroom. Combined with excellent teaching and strong relationships between students and faculty, this consistent communication ensures that learning strategies are aligned between school and home and that each student is well supported.

Important Note on Scope of Support
MPH provides thoughtful, individualized support within the scope of our program. However, as a small school with intentionally limited learning support resources, we may not be able to implement or sustain extensive or highly specialized accommodation plans (for example, very long or complex 504/IEP requirements or intensive, ongoing one-to-one interventions).

As part of the the admissions process, our goal is to ensure that each student admitted can access the curriculum, participate fully in school life, and thrive within the level of support we are able to provide.
