SUNY Poly robotics team part of winning regional alliance

A team of local high school students that is mentored by SUNY Polytechnic Institute students was part of the winning alliance of teams at a regional robotics competition in Cleveland, Ohio, announced SUNY Poly.

SUNY Poly’s FRC Team 5030, The Second Mouse, along with teams from Columbus, Ohio and Clifton, N.J., comprised the alliance that was declared champions at the FIRST Robotics Competition Buckeye Regional last week. FIRST is For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.

The three teams were among 55 teams from across the Midwest, New York, Maryland, and Canada in a series of challenges at the event in Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center, said SUNY Poly.

The Second Mouse team, mentored by SUNY Poly engineering students, is open to any area high school student who applies. It currently has members from Utica, Whitesboro, New Hartford, and Sauquoit high schools, plus Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES and Manlius Pebble Hill School. The Second Mouse also was part of the winning alliance at the Central New York 2018 FIRST Robotics Competition, held at SUNY Poly’s Marcy campus in early March. That win is sending the team to the international championship on April 25-28 in Detroit, Mich.

For the competitions, students design and build robots to accomplish particular tasks relative to the event challenges.
