Manlius Pebble Hill Jazz Festival brings back Nick Frenay
There’s good reason for the Manlius Pebble Hill School community to be excited for the ninth edition of its MPH Jazz Fest on Sunday, June 10.
A graduate will perform in the headlining band.
And a current senior will perform in one of the supporting acts.
Trumpet player Nick Frenay will perform with The Upstate Latin Jazz All Stars.
Frenay is a 2009 graduate of MPH. After completing his two-year fellowship at the Brubeck Institute at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., Frenay was awarded the presidential scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
He’ll join Central New York veterans Barry Blumenthal on piano, Mike Dubaniewicz on sax, Darryl Pugh on bass, Jimmy Johns on drums and Jorge Cuevas on percussion in the Upstate Latin Jazz All Stars.
Before that, improvisational band Steep will perform. Steep won this year’s Big Break competition over 40 bands at The Westcott Theater in Syracuse. Its founder is Parker McQueeney of Marcellus, a senior at MPH.
The MPH middle and high school bands also will perform.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students. The show starts at 3 p.m., under a tent on the MPH campus, on Jamesville Road in DeWitt.
