MPH Violinist wins 2014 Concerto Competition

Violinist Jeongyoon Han, a freshman at Manlius Pebble Hill School, has won the 2014 concerto competition sponsored by the Syracuse Youth Orchestra (SYO) and the Syracuse Youth String Orchestra (SYSO).

One of two winners this year, Han shares the top honor with a senior at Faith Heritage School.

Thirteen high school instrumentalists took part in last Saturday’s concerto competition. Han performed Charles de Beriot’s Concerto No 9 in A Minor and will play that same piece, accompanied by the SYO, in a concert at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 13 at West Genesee High School.

Han is a past concertmaster of the SYO, which along with the SYSO, is part of the Community Music Division of Syracuse University’s Setnor School of Music. The orchestras are composed of exceptional student musicians, selected by audition, from throughout Onondaga County.

Han also served for three years as concertmaster of the Onondaga County Music Educator Association’s Junior High All-County Orchestra. She began playing violin at the age of five as a Suzuki strings student at Manlius Pebble Hill School, which offers the area’s only school-based Suzuki strings program.
