Thousands of creative Central New York teens submitted their best artwork and hundreds received honors for their award-winning entries in the 2020 CNY Scholastic Art Awards, sponsored by M&T Bank and hosted by Onondaga Community College.

The works you see on online (links below) represent the caliber of art created by students from more than 90 junior and senior high schools from 13 Central New York counties. In recent weeks, volunteer judges-professional artists, educators and photographers-poured over the 4,650 individual and 128 portfolio submissions to select pieces within 17 categories. Over 1,370 works were awarded. A special awards ceremony took place on Thursday (on Jan. 21), featuring Gold Key -first place selections for entry in national competition, as well as for local awards, cash prizes, and special recognition.

Some 1,600 pieces, that include Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention winners, are currently on daily exhibition at the Whitney Applied Technology Center at Onondaga Community College through Feb. 28. In addition, the Everson Museum of Art will host a selection of student works March 7 through April 5.

The pieces identified as best within their categories will compete on the national level, with results announced in the spring. Last year the Central New York Region produced 26 national winners. The Scholastic Art Awards program, founded by Scholastic, Inc. in 1923, is the largest annual student art competition in America.

Area art teachers volunteer as the CNY Scholastic Art Advisory Council to coordinate this region’s program, which has participated for over 70 years.

See the exhibit through Feb. 28 for free at the Whitney Applied Technology Center at OCC, 4585 W. Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse. The center is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays. Schedule group visit: www.sunyocc.edu/scholastic-arts-show
